IMO, under the OceanLitter Programme, hosted the Global Task Force (GTF) Training & Workshop on "From Commitment to Action on Marine Plastic Litter from Sea-Based Sources". The event took place from 12 to 14 November 2025 at IMO Headquarters in London.

This training and workshop aims to enhance the capacity of over 30 Member States’ shipping and fisheries authorities, as well as strategic partners, donors and the private sector, by sharing the latest research, technologies, and policy approaches to address marine plastic litter originating from sea-based sources.

Marine litter presents a huge problem in our oceans, with some scientists warning that, by 2050, the quantity of plastics in the oceans will outweigh fish. IMO has been regulating marine plastic litter for the last 50 years - from the dumping of waste at sea to discharges from ships. Read more here.
