2025 Workshop on the relationship between ship energy efficiency and underwater radiated noise

image

Studies have shown that underwater radiated noise from commercial ships may have both short and long-term negative consequences on marine life, especially marine mammals. IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) approved the Revised guidelines for the reduction of underwater radiated noise from shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life (in force since 1 October 2023).

Building on the successes of the 2023 workshop and recent advancements, this workshop deepened the understanding of emerging trends and ongoing efforts in forecasting energy efficiency and underwater radiated noise (EE/URN). It drew on case studies to highlight practical lessons, strengthened public–private collaboration and identified next steps toward more integrated EE/URN approaches. The event took place on 6 and 7 November 2025 at IMO Headquarters, London.
