ISPS Code status update 01

The latest compliance figures relating to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code show a welcome improvement since the last figures were released, IMO Secretary-General Mr. Efthimios E. Mitropoulos said today (11 June 2004).

"The situation is improving as can be seen from the figures we release today," Mr. Mitropoulos said. "I welcome the continuing efforts by Governments and industry to ensure that the regulatory regime adopted by IMO in December 2002 is in place by the set deadline of 1 July 2004. However, there is still work to be done and, therefore, I again urge all parties concerned to redouble their efforts to implement the new security measures as soon as possible."

The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) was adopted, along with other maritime security measures, at a Conference on Maritime Security held at IMO in December 2002. The ISPS Code is mandatory under amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) which enter into force on 1 July 2004.
