INF Code to become mandatory. The Committee adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, aimed at making the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Packaged Irradiated Nuclear Fuel, Plutonium and High-Level Radioactive Wastes on Board Ships (INF Code) mandatory. The amendments relate to chapter VII of SOLAS (Carriage of dangerous goods).

IMO adopts revised Search and Rescue Convention. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a revised annex to the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR Convention) during the 69th session of its senior technical body, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), which met from 11 to 20 May.

Amendments to IMDG Code to be finalised in 1998. The Committee discussed the ongoing work by the Sub-Committee on Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC) in relation to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
