A 4-day workshop on ‘Somalia Maritime Governance’ is taking place this week (14-17 April 2014) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Organized by IMO, the event is expected to produce a draft or model that could form the basis of a functioning National Maritime Administration for Somalia. Senior officials from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), Somaliland and Galmudug, as well as other African states, are in attendance.
16/04/2014 Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has written to the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to express his sadness at learning of the tragic accident involving the ferry Sewol earlier today (16 April 2014). Mr Sekimizu asked that his profound sympathy and compassion be conveyed to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims.

(14 April). The ceremony
included an award in support of IMO's theme for World Maritime Day 2014 ‘IMO Conventions: Effective Implementation’, won by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). IACS Chairman Mr R. Cazzulo received the award from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal; Mr Sekimizu; and sponsor Mr Hui, Managing Director, China Classification Society.
