Mrs. Brenda V. Pimentel, Regional Co-ordinator for East Asia, represented IMO at the above activity organized by the Papua New Guinea Women in Maritime Association (PNGWiMA) as part of its work programme for 2012 on Training and Awareness. This programme is aimed at promoting maritime safety and information sharing on the maritime sector of PNG to the public and national, local and provincial agencies of government.
Since its establishment in 2007, PNGWiMA has done much in advocating for gender equality and creating awareness on career opportunities for women in the maritime sector. The organization is widely supported by many governmental agencies and the private sector. PNGWiMA actively pursues programmes and activities consistent with the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Regional Co-ordinator briefed the participants on the IMO programme on the Integration of Women in the Maritime Sector – consistent with the call of the United Nations on promoting gender equality and empowering women (MDG3) – and focused on how the maritime sector could facilitate sustainable development parallel to realizing the MDGs.
The Road Show demonstrated the commitment of PNGWiMA to empower the country’s women in the maritime sector despite the limited resources available to them to achieve their mission and objectives.
