The Joint IMO/ITU Experts Group on Maritime Radiocommunication Matters has been established to develop the future requirements for maritime radiocommunications, taking into account the operational needs as defined by IMO and the regulatory needs as defined by ITU.
The Group meets, as required, intersessionally between meetings of the COMSAR Sub-Committee. The Group reports to the COMSAR Sub-Committee and, as appropriate, to meetings of the relevant Study Groups and/or Working Parties of ITU-R. The Group conducts its work on the basis of Terms of Reference agreed by the COMSAR Sub-Committee and endorsed by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC).
The 6th meeting of the Group was held from 14 to 16 September 2010, at IMO Headquarters in London, and the report of that meeting has been made available as document COMSAR 15/6. The two main topics of that meeting were to:
1. update the draft IMO position on WRC-12 Agenda items concerning matters relating to maritime services; and
2. consider the issue of a "Scoping exercise to establish the need for a review of the elements and procedures of the GMDSS".
The report of the 6th meeting of the Joint IMO/ITU Experts Group will be considered by the COMSAR Sub-Committee at its 15th session, to take place from 7 to 11 March 2011, at IMO Headquarters in London.
